چکیده

We propose several numerical approaches building on upstream mobility two-point flux approximation finite volumes to solve Richards’ equation in domains made of rock-types. Our study encompasses four different schemes corresponding ways approximate the nonlinear transmission condition systems arising at interface between rocks consisting continuity pressure and fluxes, as well resolution strategies based Newton’s method with variable switch. benchmark robustness accuracy methods filling drainage test cases standard nonlinearities Brooks-Corey van Genuchten-Mualem type, challenging steep nonlinearities.

Gradient schemes for two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media and Richards equation

The gradient scheme family, which includes the conforming and mixed finite elements as well as the mimetic mixed hybrid family, is used for the approximation of Richards equation and the two-phase flow problem in heterogeneous porous media. We prove the convergence of the approximate saturation and of the approximate pressures and approximate pressure gradients thanks to monotony and compactnes...

A numerical method for efficient 3D inversions using Richards equation

Fluid flow in the vadose zone is governed by Richards equation; it is parameterized by hydraulic conductivity, which is a nonlinear function of pressure head. Investigations in the vadose zone typically require characterizing distributed hydraulic properties. Saturation or pressure head data may include direct measurements made from boreholes. Increasingly, proxy measurements from hydrogeophysi...

Mixed Finite Elements for the Nonlinear Richards’ Equation

In this work, we present a two-dimensional mixed-hybrid finite element model of variably saturated flow on unstructured triangular meshes. Velocities are approximated using lowest order Raviart-Thomas (RT0) elements with piecewise constant pressure. The resulting nonlinear systems of algebraic equations are solved using Picard or Newton iterations in combination with ad hoc preconditioning tech...
